It was standing room only in the Unity Books Wellington store on Wednesday 4th October, as a buzzing crowd gathered in anticipation of further insights into Diana Wichtel’s intriguing family history. Vancouver born journalist Diana Wichtel, known for her writing in The Listener, has generated considerable anticipation ahead of the release of her book which chronicles her search for the fate of a father lost to her and her family. When Wichtel was aged just 13, they made the move from Canada to New Zealand. While carefully preserving the secrets revealed in the later chapters of the book, Wichtel gave her hushed audience a fascinating insight into the process of tracing her father’s journey across Europe and beyond. As ever, the why in this case is as compelling as the what and Wichtel gave a stirring account of the experience of a journalist, writer and a daughter, driven to the point of compulsion in the pursuit of truth in whatever form the history books and mists of memory can provide it.
