Unity Books was lucky to host Los Angeles thriller writer Gregg Hurwitz for a lunchtime talk this Thursday. Gregg has been writing thrillers since he was 19, but only after 14 books was he able to conjure up a character that he loved enough to write a series around. The character Evan Smoak has been an international success with the second book, The Nowhere Man, currently sitting at number 1 on NZ bestseller charts and the first, Orphan X, still hanging out at number 4.
Gregg shared his experiences of starting out as a writer. An urge to push himself for the cause of a good novel really showed through in his talk. Gregg studied English Literature and Psychology at Harvard and Trinity College, Oxford, all the better to understand the perfectly contained drama and psychology of successful fiction.
Gregg’s books are full of technical detail and he sees the research he puts in as continuing his education. His research style is the opposite of armchair. Greg has taken martial arts and firearms training classes, he has had close up demonstrations of explosives, immersed himself in luxury vodka and gone undercover into a mind-control cult. The extent of his Rolodex can only be imagined.
It was such a pleasure to have Gregg visit the shop.
