“Photos of the Sky” & “Working the Tang” published by The Cuba Press
For the lunchtime double poetry event on Wednesday, November 7th, we were joined by a terrific trio. Mary McCallum from The Cuba Press, publisher of two new collections, was in conversation with poets, Saradha Koirala, author of Photos of the Sky, and Nicola Easthope, author of Working the Tang. After brief introductions, each of the colourful Wellington writers opened with tributes to the late, great David Bowie.

Easthope and Koirala are both English teachers and have found teaching their craft has aided in their editing and refinement, as well as liberated them stylistically. Koirala’s collection contemplates daily life, capturing snapshots of specific moments and emotions.

Easthope’s often humorous Working the Tang casts many references to her ancestry, bringing her readers to the British Isles to share cups of tea with villagers and catch rides with vicars. Easthope gave a shoutout to Ricky Baker (Hunt for the Wilderpeople) for bringing haiku back into fashion and Koirala closed by reading her ode to Taika Waititi. Both writers signed copies after the reading.
