AFTERGLOW: The Beat of the Pendulum by Catherine Chidgey

Acclaimed novelist and prodigal Wellingtonian Catherine Chidgey was joined by fellow author and firm friend Tracey Slaughter to launch her experimental ‘found novel’, The Beat of the Pendulum, at Unity Books Wellington at lunchtime, Wednesday 8th November.

The two authors performed two readings from the book, which is constructed entirely from the words of conversations between Catherine and a group of conscripts to the project, some of whom it was revealed were more willing participants than others.

The assembled crowd of publishers, writers and readers provided an enlightening line of questioning as well as an observation Catherine particularly enjoyed, likening her construction process to observing murmurations of starlings.

First things first, Catherine Chidgey gets out the selfie stick.

Good friends Catherine Chidgey and Tracey Slaughter share a warm and honest raport.

The Beat of the Pendulum is, among other things, hilariously honest.

Catherine and Tracey had a lot of fun reprising their roles in readings from the book.

A lively Q&A session got in to the nuts and bolts of the ‘found novel’ writing process.

Kirsten McDougall of VUP asks the tough questions.

The all important signing.

The Beat of the Pendulum is available in store and online at Unity Books now.
