On Monday 17th of June Unity books hosted the launch of historian Jock Phillips’ memoir Making History: A New Zealand Story published by Auckland University Press. The event was filled with family, friends, and historians abound. Sam Elworthy of Auckland University Press spoke followed by Dr. Bronwyn Labrum, Head of New Zealand and Pacific Cultures at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. Sir Geoffrey Palmer launched the book describing a young Jock Phillips as a “dangerous, trendy, lefty from Victoria University”, to paraphrase Robert Muldoon, in a wonderfully entertaining speech. Jock then spoke about the book, of weekly letters he had written to his mother, the image on the cover and a long, influential career as a pioneering public historian.
