AFTERGLOW: ‘Word to the Wise’ by Mark Broatch

Lunchtime on Tuesday 12th September saw journalist and editor Mark Broatch joined in-store by local author Catherine Robertson to discuss his new book, Word to the Wise: Untangling the Mix-Ups, Misuse and Myths of Language, published by Exisle Publishing. Originally started as a personal project to help himself differentiate between words with similar appearances or meanings, he soon realised that such a guide would be useful to other writers or fellow language enthusiasts. An eager crowd of like-minded souls gathered in the shop to hear Mark and Catherine discuss common mix-ups such as ‘disinterested’ and ‘uninterested’, the slow death of paper dictionaries, the effects of the internet on language (not always bad!), and how language evolves over time.
