On Thursday May 15, Unity Books Wellington played host to Swedish noir superstar Camilla Lackberg. From the very beginning, it was clear that this was not going to be our average author event. “You can ask me any questions you like,” Camilla said. “I’m Swedish, so I have no filter.” After explaining how all of her novels track not only a contemporary story, but a historical thread that ties in to the overarching plot, she read two excerpts – one from each storyline – from her latest release, Buried Angels.
The floor was then opened to the gathered crowd – filling all the seats and then some – and Camilla answered questions and shared stories across all manner of topics. She spoke of attitudes towards her books in Sweden, where their prime minister is a known fan but literary critics apparently turn up their noses on the basis of popularity. She told the audience about her first ‘book’, written (with her father’s help) at age four – a four-page Santa-themed tale of murder. “So it was either be a serial killer, or a crime writer.”
She charmed us all, customers and staff members alike, and proved herself a worthy ambassador for the Scandinavian crime fiction scene.
