In 2002, Unity Books and other bookshops including members of some chains, discovered that a group of publishers were investigating selling direct to libraries at larger discounts than they offered to booksellers – and were not happy. The result of which was that publishers discontinued the trial as uneconomic, but in the process they had managed to alienate many of their existing customers. This press release from Tilly Lloyd outlines the general bookseller position at the end of the fiasco.
