The audience turned up nice and early Wednesday lunchtime to ensure seats to a greatly anticipated conversation on investigative journalism in NZ between Massey University’s Head of Journalism, James Hollings, and RNZ’s Mediawatch presenter, Jeremy Rose.
A Moral Truth, edited by James Hollings, collects together 33 examples of investigative reporting in NZ dating from 1863 to 2016. James and Jeremy provided thoughtful and enjoyable conversation that didn’t shy away from the dark side of NZ’s history. The 1903 and 1904 articles by Hilda Rollett on Auckland’s slums and the life of the household help have sad parallels these days as does the casual brutality and callousness of authority which still continues to rear its head.
Their depth of knowledge and familiarity with NZ media history made the talk a real pleasure. The audience had an excellent time and I’m really looking forward to diving into this collection.
