In 2002, Unity Books and other bookshops including members of some chains, discovered that a group of publishers were investigating selling direct to libraries at larger discounts than they offered to booksellers – and were not happy. The result of which was that publishers discontinued the trial as uneconomic, but in the process they had managed to alienate many of their existing customers.
