4th July 2018 –
Wellington-based writer Isa Pearl Ritchie was at Unity Books on Wednesday night to launch her second novel Fishing For Māui.
‘A novel about food, whānau, and mental illness’, Fishing For Māui follows a cast of characters dealing with issues surrounding health, ethical eating, reconnecting with heritage and finding one’s own identity. The novel draws on Ritchie’s studies in food sovereignty in Aotearoa and her experiences of growing up in a bi-cultural family.
Isa was joined in launching the book by friend and early reader Robert Moore, who introduced the book, and Paul Stewart, who proof-read, edited and typeset the book. Robert noted that Isa’s knowledge around methods of well-being seemed to naturally lead to inspiration for fiction writing, and wondered if family and friends would see themselves reflected, particularly in the eating habits of Isa’s characters. He can also attest to her sourdough and ‘feijoa fizz’ mixing prowess. Paul spoke with great admiration of Isa’s talent and the smooth process of working with her on the book.
Isa followed Robert and Paul at the mic to share three short readings from her book which demonstrated the range of voices which combine to form the narrative. Isa was keen to thank so many people for joining her to celebrate the launch and to extended her thanks to everyone who supported her during the writing of Fishing For Māui.
Many friends and family were among the readers who eagerly queued to have their crisp new copies of the book signed in person.
Fishing For Māui by Isa Pearl Ritchie, published by Te Rā Aroha Press, is now available in store and online.
