Chris Brickell joined us for a lunchtime event on Wednesday 30th August to discuss his new book, Teenagers: The Rise of Youth Culture in New Zealand, published by Auckland University Press. A generous and engaging speaker, Brickell shared that his work on the book began 8 years ago as a photographic project, morphing into a social and cultural history of young people in New Zealand from the late 19th century onward.
Drawing on diaries, letters and photographs that teenagers of the past left behind, Brickell has assembled for us a fascinating, and sometimes quite intimate, history of our teenagers. After taking questions from the audience, Brickell stayed on to sign copies of his book and talk to members of the audience.
