Event Update: Tragedy at Pike River Mine by Rebecca Macfie

On Thursday the 28th of November, Unity Books Wellington was proud to host a lunchtime talk by Rebecca Macfie, whose new book Tragedy at Pike River Mine was recently published by Awa Press.

Rebecca’s understanding of Pike River’s history and the factors which set it on the course to disaster is unparalleled. Her engagement with Pike River Mine began when she covered the mine’s collapse and its aftermath for The Listener and her research has continued apace over the years following. Tragedy at Pike River Mine is the product of more than one hundred interviews and the dedicated analysis of countless corporate and governmental sources.

This impressive attention to detail and deep understanding of the bigger picture were very much in evidence throughout Rebecca’s speech, which laid out the Pike River mine’s catastrophic failings, and the human toll they levied, in shocking detail. The audience were visibly moved by Rebecca’s presentation, which was followed by eager questioning and passionate debate.
