AFTERGLOW: 100 Natural History Treasures of Te Papa

On Thursday the 9th May Wellington saw the revival of many old and treasured species. Massive in scope and soaked in historical and cultural importance, Te Papa launched both their new natural history wing, Te Taiao Nature, and a book to accompany it. 100 Natural History Treasures of Te Papa collects just a small fraction of Te Papa’s overwhelming assortment of strange and fascinating New Zealand flora and animal life into a beautifully presented book.

The book was a combined effort between Te Papa Press and Te Papa’s science branch and Thursday’s launch reflected this perfectly. Nicola Legat of Te Papa Press introduced the evening, spreading kind words of thanks to the many contributors of the book. Susan Waugh followed her, speaking as editor about the process and the love she had for her team at Te Papa and the Press for putting their work into such a well collected package. Finally, professor Gary Evans launched the book. His passionate speech on the importance of the natural environment and his love for the Blobfish highlighted the integral work that Te Papa do.

From the Hagfish to the Pseudoscorpions, 100 Natural History Treasures of Te Papa exhibits the variety of natural wonders that New Zealand has and had. A visual history of what we need to protect.
