On Monday the 7th of March Unity Books Wellington was extremely excited to host the launch of Emily Writes’ first book Rants in the Dark. A large group of Wellingtonians and more from further afield welcomed Emily and her entourage and a great time was had by all.
Penguin Random House publisher Margaret Sinclair introduced the speakers and said that she felt privileged to have been part of the making of a book that didn’t make a village, but made the village aware that it was one. She also emphasised how impressive the writing effort had been considering the first conversations about the possibility of a book had begun just over a year ago.
Gem Wilder launched the book and spoke about how important not feeling alone is for parents. She told a wonderful story about a baby quilt made for Emily with two distinctly different themes and emphasised how much love and affection had gone into the writing of the book.
Emily Writes spoke clearly and without compromise. She acknowledged her communities and the people who had helped her in the making of Rants in the Dark. To much amusement she thanked Penguin Random House for recognising that her “flaws were marketable”. Emily then read two pieces from the book, one of which was a stirring and evocative essay on the devastating lows and odd moments of humour to be found in a night of caring for children with gastroenteritis.
A wonderful night was had by adults, children and author alike.
