On Thursday the 10th of October, Unity Books Wellington was proud to host the launch of Paikea: The Life of I.L.G. Sutherland, written by his son, Oliver Sutherland.
Ivan Sutherland is a central figure of New Zealand’s intellectual and progressive histories. His studies in social psychology and his work in developing Pakeha understandings of Maori culture were central in questioning dominant assumptions about race, history and New Zealand’s future at a time when ideas of “racialism” and eugenics still held sway in respectable society.
Sutherland’s life intersected with those of many prominent New Zealanders, such as Sir Apirana Ngata, John Beaglehole and Thomas Hunter, and Oliver’s book draws on all of the diverse threads that made up his life story. They range from his pioneering publications, such as The Maori Situation and The Maori People Today, to his work in developing children’s psychological services and public radio, and his difficult relationship with Karl Popper, with whom he worked to assist Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. Paikea also succeeds in situating these accomplishments in the context of Sutherland’s family and times, telling the whole story of a singular life.
The book was launched with speeches by Canterbury University Press’ publisher, Catherine Montgomery, who discussed the book’s development, and Tim Beaglehole, the son of Ivan Sutherland’s closest friend, John Beaglehole, who described his own memories of the man. Oliver’s sister, Diony then spoke to sketch out her father’s life in greater detail and to honour the family and friends who could not attend the launch. Oliver Sutherland concluded the evening’s speeches by describing the personal and professional journey he has undertaken in crafting this deeply researched and bravely honest book. At the end of his speech, Oliver and his wife Ulla brought out a ukulele to sing “Te Haerenga mai o Nga Tipuna”, composed by Mate Huatahi Kaiwai, a daughter of Apirana Ngata.
The launch was well attended, giving many people the chance to share their memories of Ivan Sutherland and his times. Signed copies were eagerly snapped up and a great time was had by all.
Unity Books would like to thank Oliver Sutherland, his friends and whanau, Canterbury University Press and all those who came out to celebrate the publication of this important book. Signed copies available while stocks last.
